Collywobble

Author: Malachy DoyleIllustrator: Petra Brown

Collywobble is the weakest little collie pup in Bess the sheepdog’s litter of seven. Farms are businesses and while Farmer Joe said Collywobble could stay he added, ‘But you’ll have to earn your keep’.   Collywobble turns out to be much stronger than he looks. He’s brave and resourceful, too, and ventures out into the darkening evening to seek the farmer; he is able to find help when he discovers the farm truck has turned over in the snow, injuring Joe and Bess.  This is a familiar but eternally appealing storyline about things turning out well in spite of an unpromising start. The illustrations of the Welsh landscape give a marvellous sense of place and the animals are beautifully drawn – just look at the telling expressions on the faces of the sheep! A hugely attractive book for the under fives to share and talk about.
