Daddy Doesn’t Believe in Dragons

Author: Sarah TagholmIllustrator: Alice Courtley

Dad has spent SO long working from home and has finished at last, so his daughter is excitedly taking Dad on an adventure. Soon they come to a ‘rickety, rackety bridge’ over which they go, ‘tripetty, trappety, tripetty, trapetty’ and out springs a troll from beneath said bridge. Dad, busy checking his phone, is completely oblivious of this and so his daughter thinks he doesn’t believe in trolls. Nor does he believe in the mischievous pixies that make their homes in the Dingley Dell (Dad’s now sending an email) and as you might expect doesn’t believe in the tiny folk. The same is true of the very large yeti that stalks them as Dad discusses profit margins on his mobile, the giant is a no-no too. Eventually the two reach the Enchanted Shore and still Dad is on his phone. But enough is enough: his daughter shouts at him insisting that he leaves his phone and listens to her…

Finally there’s something that Daddy does believe in and he even tells his boss so. In fact he has changed his mind about all the other things that appeared too.

There’s a terrific final twist in this fantastic tale of the walk undertaken by the work and phone-obsessed dad and his young daughter: the final wordless illustration will reveal all, to the delight of the young listeners around the age of the small protagonist.

Immediately engaging words and equally engaging illustrations that extend the text make for a cautionary that should be heeded by fanatical phone users.
