Dragon Child: The Emerald Quest

Author: Gill Vickery

Tia had been kidnapped from her home as a small child and taken to live with dragons.  This was in retribution for the theft of Dragon Jewels by the group of witches that now rule the land of Tulay.  This novel is the first in what is to be a series in which Tia embarks on a quest to find the jewels and return them to their rightful owners.

This is an exciting story for young people, with a strong group of characters and a well constructed plot.  Despite the limitations of the vocabulary, page count and comprehension level the author has developed a story that draws the audience in and makes you want to continue reading, one of the major criteria at this age level.  Because the series is  in the shape of a quest the readers are able to build a relationship with the characters over a period of time.  It also enables the author to develop the characters as they do through the books and are challenged by each new adventure. It is good to see a series for this age range that has some depth and actually develops beyond the bland.  Excellent for new readers and for reading aloud.
