Mr Pod and Mr Piccalilli

Author: Penny DolanIllustrator: Nick Sharratt

Two solitary bachelors, portly Mr Pod and lanky Mr Piccalilli, live their similar but separate lives, one above the other in a block of flats. Only when their respective cats, Tod and Millie, go missing do they break out of their solitary confinement. Each bakes a cake for the other and on the way down (or up) the stairs to deliver it, they find their beloved cats too have got together with some interesting results.

Sharratt has some fun matching the interiors of the flats to the respective body shapes of the two Mr Ps. The contrast of their taste in furniture, decoration and attire, and the similarity of the mirrored, simple storylines can be the more easily appreciated through the double-decker shape of the book, which allows them to sit one above the other. A book designed for individual reading or sharing between pairs of readers so that the similarities in the text and pictures can be discovered and enjoyed.
