Musicians
Part of a series celebrating Britons who have made some significant contribution in their field, whether in science or the arts, sport or politics, this new title selects 21 British musicians and encompasses jazz and pop as well as classical performers, conductors and composers. Justification for the selection is made right at the outset: it is a personal one, but the choices are sound and box features allow additional names to be included. The entry on Simon Rattle for example includes brief mention of the conducting trio Beecham, Barbirolli and Sargent. Nevertheless one can’t help debating the relegation of William Walton to a subentry in Britten and Kathleen Ferrier to a box in Vera Lynn’s entry, or the omission altogether of John Tavener. Entries range from Byrd and Purcell to Jacqueline du Pré, Eric Clapton and Evelyn Glennie. Each includes a brief biography, giving details of works performed or composed and setting each musician in their historical context, with information on particular forms of music such as oratorio or opera. A glossary is included at the end, together with website addresses. A useful addition to the series which will prove valuable in a class library or for project work.
