Return of the Hundred-Mile-An-Hour Dog

Author: Jeremy StrongIllustrator: Rowan Clifford

Trevor meets the beautiful Melinda Boffington-Orr out walking. But things start to go wrong when his hundred-mile-an-hour dog, Streaker, knocks her over. Melinda’s father is the new police superintendent, and he vows that if Streaker isn’t trained in time for the dog show then she will be put down.

Trevor and his friend Tina set about training Streaker. If she doesn’t win they will lose their bet with Charlie Smugg, and end up taking a bath in a smelly horse trough. On the day of the dog show Streaker proves that she really is the hundred-mile-an-hour dog, Mr Boffington-Orr ends up with a red face and Charlie and Melinda get their comeuppance.

This amusing story will appeal to both boys and girls in the 8-10 age-group. The text is well-spaced and the humorous illustrations make the book more accessible to less confident readers. The suitably comic muddy finale is followed by an unexpectedly sentimental ending that will surely give rise to a few cries of ‘Yuk!’ from the boys.
