The Flight of the Mermaid

Authors: Gita Wolf, Sirish RaoIllustrator: Bhajju Shyam

This story is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’. It creates its own magical and special flavour through its impressive format and design. The front cover has a die-cut fish that can be removed to reveal the mermaid on the frontispiece. The stylised illustrations by an acclaimed Indian tribal artist are exceptionally vivid in recreating a realistic underwater environment.

Each double page spread has a full-page illustration and an adjacent page of neatly organised text in the lower half. This helps maintain the proportion between the bold illustrations and prose.

The story begins with brief information about the general myth of mermaids in a different font and colour. The actual story of ‘The Flight of the Mermaid’ is narrated in a simple manner and traditional style. It is a fascinating story as it intertwines natural elements and human feelings in a magical and mysterious manner. Whether it is read aloud by a teacher, or by a young reader, once started it is hard to put the book down.
