The One and Only You

Author: Shane HegartyIllustrator: Ben Mantle

In this ‘not normal’ book of facts, it takes six pages to reach the statement ‘there is only one you’. Whilst the girl at the centre of the tale might look just like her cousin, or have her mummy’s nose, all family traits when put together have created her and no one else. Back we go; Earth is 4 1/2 billion years old and from the teeniest grain of dust floating around came ‘the lumbering; the skies full of swallows; the whales who sing songs across seas.’ But of everything that have has ever lived, there is only just one of her. Without feeling any sense of loneliness in realising this fact, there is joy in being unique and that in interacting with other people, family, friends, birds and beasts, there is celebration in being the only one. The pages zing with colour and show an emotional warmth to enhance this perfectly pitched tale of individuality.
