The Thunk
Illustrator: Deborah AllwrightHector Voltaire is a boy with imagination and flair. He believes in wonders – unicorns, trolls, a dragon in a cave. However, there is one creature he is determined to fin, a creature everyone claims is extinct, if indeed it had ever existed. This is the Thunk with its blue-ish pink fur and horrible stink, Hector is undeterred. Armed with all the necessities – teabags, toast forks, bread, butter, ketchup in kegs – and a special type of camping stool – he sets off on his quest. Will he succeed? Do Thunks exist?
This is a cheerful picture book with a jaunty rhyming text and illustrations that perfectly match the tone of the narrative. The author celebrates the power and value of an imagination; of seeking and finding, of believing in oneself. But there is no serious moral, instead humour and a sense of fun – even of the ridiculous, carry the message. In a present where “reality” and fact are seen as all important it is refreshing to find such a theme – and it may strike a chord in young readers. The bright illustrations, popping off the page with their vivid palette of colours anchor Hector ( and the young audience) in the recognisable world with recognisable characters. The introduction of The Thunk is as natural as a discovery of a Giant Sloth. There is no need for a magic door – just active imagination, belief – and of course teabags and that special stool! An enjoyable addition to any library – fun to read and share.
