Very Little Cinderella
Illustrator: Sue HeapFollowing their take on the Red Riding Hood story (Very Little Red Riding Hood), this picture book partnership turn their attention to Cinderella; and a very modern Cinderella she is. There are no ‘princesses’ here (thank goodness) though we do have a Little Prince. Instead we have a small girl with very definite ideas. No shiny dresses for her. She will go to the party in her favourite blue dress, stripy hat – and yellow boots.
This is a cosy story, ideal for reading at bedtime. Sue Heap’s attractive and lively illustrations are the perfect match to the simple text which is presented in beautifully clear font. Parents – or babysitters – will recognise the scenario which never strays from reality (even if Very Little Cinderella does stay up until midnight), while the young audience will appreciate the situation and recognise a friend. My only reservation is the rather arch and conscious use of ‘small child speak’ which I feel is unnecessary. However, this is an attractive addition to the storybook shelves and kinderboxes. If the maps on the end covers are to be believed, we can look forward to more retellings from this talented pair.
